Der Fotojournalist Simon Klingert hat auf seine letzte Tour nach Afghanistan nicht nur seine hypermodernen digitalen Spiegelreflexkameras mitgenommen, sondern auch eine alte Zeiss IKON-Kamera. Diese ist ein Erbstück seines Großvaters, welcher mit ihr bereits im Zweiten Weltkrieg an der Ostfront fotografierte.
Fast forward 70 years and I take photos with it again, this time of U.S. soldiers, my grandfather’s former enemies. They gladly host me, and as it turns out, covering their fight with this camera is a humbling experience to say at least. It also touches the single most fascinating aspect of this project: the timelessness of war and the images it provides. Taken with the same camera 70 years later, the similarity between those who fight their wars and the misery they endure is evident.
Ich binde hier bewusst nur ein Bild ein, denn auf der Seite des Fotografen hat er die neuen Bilder aus Afghanistan direkt neben die historischen Aufnahmen seines Großvaters gestellt. Es ist erstaunlich, wie die alte Kamera die bekannte Bildästhetik des Afghanistan-Krieges verändert und der des Zweiten Weltkrieges annähert. Auf manchen Bildern ist es nur die Ausrüstung, welche eine Unterscheidung überhaupt möglich macht.
